The Magdalen Chapter Hotel is located centrally in Exeter city’s
neighbouring Southernhay and is one of Exeter’s most iconic buildings.
Originally a Victorian Eye Hospital, this striking building has been carefully
restored and extended to give a stunning new environment with glass
fronted lounges and restaurant looking out onto the walled garden and
outside pool. Each of the 59 rooms over 5 floors offer a unique and
individual experience, with stunning views across the city and out to the
The restaurant with its theatre style kitchen is guided by head chef Ben Bulger. Under the guidance of Simon Hopkinson the team creates a daily changing menu which embraces the seasons and the teams desire to use quality local produce thus promoting not only the hotel but all that is unique about Devon and the West Country. Ben who recently won Devon Life chef of the year, with the support of his team and Simon’s philosophy of thoughtfully prepared food, is an inspiration to all young and upcoming chef’s in the region.
Developing a design first devised by Sefton Horne Winch, GS Group created a kitchen which was both innovative and contemporary but above all operated practically and efficiently, utilizing all available space and creating a work environment which matched the chefs flair and style.
With the open style servery and stunning visuals of the kitchen, diners are almost encouraged to join the chef while he prepares their meals, thus adding to the whole experience, a concept that GS Group feels creates unique insight to the workings of a professional kitchen. With the introduction of a specialist pizza oven, procured from the southern hemisphere and taking 12 weeks to arrive by freight, Hotel Magdalen is able to offer yet another dining experience individual to the region with which GS Group are proud to have been involved with.
By using quality manufactures for the prime equipment, this minimizes disruption to this busy kitchen facility through breakdowns and long lead times on replacement parts. Client satisfaction is of paramount importance to GS Group, an ethos which has allowed us to maintain a long and successfully relationship with both client and suppliers.
