Brunel Primary Academy

Bridge Multi-Academy Trust consist of 14 Primary Schools throughout Cornwall.

We were employed to undertake a full turnkey operation for a new kitchen at Brunel Primary Academy which would fit within the pre-war school building. We had to work with specific deadlines and with other trades including ventilation and ceiling installation specialists.

Our works included:

  • Full strip out of existing equipment, electrics, plumbing and heating pipes.
  • Asbestos removal organised
  • Walls prepared and squared off.
  • Foodsafe hygienic wall cladding and anti-slip flooring installed.
  • Full re-wire
  • New plumbing
  • Heating boiler
  • Ventilation system
  • New suspended ceiling
  • New fire-rated wall with security and fire-rated shutter.
  • Decoration
  • New equipment installed and commissioned.

The project was organised through the Academy Trust and Buildings Surveyor for the total package to be designed and coordinated by our Contracts Manager, Brian Russell.

We designed the layout of the kitchen following consultation with the client property manager, surveyor, school cook and head teacher and met for design approval prior to installation.

We coordinated the work of various trades including; electrician, plumber, walls and flooring contractor, builder for the new fire boundary, ventilation / extraction company and fire alarm contractor, to ensure the programme was met and all elements of the installation were carried out accordingly.

This job developed throughout the duration of the programme due to the onsite builder’s inability to perform within the timescales. The builder instructed us to carry out the building works forming the new fire boundary, new ceiling, wall cladding, plumbing and decoration.

We completed our element of the project within the 6 week summer holiday plus one more week due to having total control of all contractors and being able to coordinate their works. Brian was able to maximise the available time with no reliability on others and maintained complete communication to ensure the smooth running of the project.

The finished project provided a bright, clean, modern kitchen, incorporating ventilation within the kitchen which was not part of the existing layout – this is now being appreciated by the kitchen staff.
